You are going to celebrate the coming wedding with the Chessian ceremony. It is a established betrothal ceremony of the Buddhists. During the Chessian, the maternal uncle of the bride will sit on a platform as the lama offers a prayer and then shares the Mandayan with the other guests. Mandayan is a Buddhist drink. After this ceremony, you will then ask for the date of the wedding which will be astrologically.

The family and other relatives will be invited in the wedding. Some may also choose to hold the occasion in a temple. This is perfective if you are expecting more guests.

During the day of the wedding, always arrive early. This is to pay respect to the Lord Buddha. The groom has to fetch his dowry which has the effigy of the Buddha. The ordinary Buddhist dowry will consist of only either six or nine trays. The number seven and eight are believed to be unlucky.

The ceremony will commence by the lightning of the candles and incensed place right in front of the Buddha’s shrine. It will be accompanied by the Vandana, Tisarana and Pancasila hymns.

The couple will then recite the wedding vows that are inscribed in the Sigilovdda Sutta. For this, the groom will say “Towards my wife I try to love and respect her, be kind and considerate, be faithful, and delegate domestic management and present gifts to please her.” The bride will then say, “Towards my husband I undertake to carry out my household duties efficiently, be hospitable to my in-laws and friends of my husband, be faithful, protect and invest our earnings and discharge my responsibilities lovingly and fastidiously.”

The ceremony will finish by reciting the blessings for the newlyweds.
